Merced Irrigation District Storm Drainage
In 1990, in regards to storm drainage, requested changes to the California Water Code authorized the Merced Irrigation District to collect fees for the conveyance of storm or sewage water in its canal system. On February 1, 1994, the Merced Irrigation District Drainage Improvement District No. 1 was established and was authorized to begin operation on September 6, 1994.
The purpose for the creation of the Merced Irrigation District Drainage Improvement District No. 1 is to utilize the District’s existing canal system to provide drainage services for the benefit of commercial, industrial and residential developments in areas where there are no natural channels for the conveyance of storm water, and proportionally share the cost of maintaining the dual use canals between the farmers’ irrigation demands and the storm drainage demands based on benefit received. The District, pursuant to Irrigation District Law, constructs, owns, operates and maintains canals for irrigation and storm drainage/urban drainage purposes for the benefit of customers and property owners within the District.
The services provided shall be the construction, operation and maintenance of drainage works and facilities necessary to commercial, industrial and residential development within the Merced Irrigation District Drainage Improvement District No. 1. Service charges shall be collected from properties to which drainage services are provided for the cost of such services.
