Key Updates for All Houseboaters
• Yacht Insurance
All houseboat permit holders are required to carry yacht insurance in compliance with updated regulations. Unlike standard recreational boat insurance, yacht insurance provides higher liability coverage and is tailored to address risks specific to larger vessels like houseboats.
This requirement is designed to protect Lake McClure and the Merced Irrigation District (MID) in case of an environmental hazard caused by a houseboat. Proper coverage mitigates risks such as accidental fuel spills, pollution, or other damage that could impact the lake’s natural resources and infrastructure.
• Floatation Devices Plans must be Stamped and Certified
MID requires a plan detailing flotation device design, dimensions, displacement, and boatload capacity to be submitted to the District prior to completion of any new Houseboat construction or flotation device reconstruction. The plan must be stamped and certified by an architect or engineer familiar with such devices, and currently certified by the state of California.

• Marine Title Company for Transfers
All Houseboat title transfers/sales must go through an MID approved marine title/escrow company.
