MID Board increases surface water allocation while decreasing cost

May 17, 2022

For the second time this year, the Merced Irrigation District Board of Directors voted to increase the available surface water supply from Lake McClure to in-District Class 1 growers. Further, the Board decreased the cost of the allocated water.

Under the new allocation, growers will receive 2.25 acre feet per acre of surface water for the 2022 growing season. Retroactive to the May 1 billing cycle, the cost will decrease from $100 per acre foot to $75 per acre foot.

Based on initial review of the snowpack and expected conditions at Lake McClure, MID set an allocation of 1.1 acre feet per acre of surface water in March. In April, based on improvements in the water outlook, the Board increased the allocation to 1.67 acre-feet-per acre. Again, based on an improved outlook with snowpack and runoff from late-season storms, today the Board made the decision to increase the allocation and decrease the cost.
